ARTERIOSCLEROSIS

Calcification of arteries is a narrowing and hardening of arteries, caused by deposits on the inner walls. The vessels of the legs as well as carotid arteries can be affected, which can either lead to a stroke or to a peripheral arterial occlusive disease. The heart coronary vessels can also be affected which can lead to a heart attack. Arterial calcification can be caused and worsened by multiple risk factors, such as nutrition, life style, genetic predisposition, smoking, high blood pressure, increased cholesterol level and diabetes. The early examination of vessels, especially if risk factors are present, can prevent serious changes through therapy and adjustment of risk factors.
